He says if the party is racist, it will not have been accepted for decades to lead a multi-racial coalition of parties representing various races
KUALA LUMPUR: Using the Umno platform to hit out at the Opposition and its antics, Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak today said that Umno, being the backbone of the ruling coalition, was not a racist party.
The Umno president in opening the party annual general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre, said the largest political party in the country was not anti-Chinese as perceived by many.
He said that if the party was racist, it would not have been accepted for decades to lead a multi-racial coalition of parties representing various races.
“I repeat, Umno is not anti-Chinese.
“But it is clear that the Chinese and part of the Indian community, have been dragged, and trapped to become victims of the perception and lies of the Opposition,” Najib said in his presidential address. The opening ceremony of the AGM was also attended by all BN component party leaders.
This AGM would be the last before the country’s 14th general election, which is expected to be held after the Chinese New Year next February.
Najib’s hard hitting speech, mostly concentrated in whacking the Opposition, follows criticism against Pakatan Harapan by Umno’s Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings at their respective annual general meetings yesterday.
The prime minister said that Umno was actually above all, as it has all this while celebrated the diversity in the country.
“We believe in harmony in order to live peacefully together, depending on each other and complementing each other,” he said.
Najib said the 14th general election (GE14) was not just another general election.
“This election places us at a monumental crossroads, because in our hands. we have a choice which will determine the fate of this nation.”
