Division chief Jason Teoh is also confident that MCA will be able to defend its other parliament seats in Johor

KUALA LUMPUR: Gelang Patah MCA division chief Jason Teoh Sew Hock who is tipped to be BN’s candidate to regain the parliamentary seat is wary about his chances of unseating incumbent MP, Lim Kit Siang of the DAP.

“Not all fights will ensure us a victory. We have to work hard, plan and make a lot of sacrifices to win. Most importantly, there must be a committed teamwork,” Teoh told Berita Daily.

He also said that there were factors in favour of MCA regaining the seat for BN.

“There are no issues over teamwork among the BN component parties. I have also formed Team Jason which has been on the ground since 2014,” said Teoh.

Team Jason is made up of MCA members, pro BN NGOs and volunteers.

Teoh added that the Gelang Patah constituency had no outstanding local issues.

”This constituency has no local issues since we have resolved all of it, not Lim Kit Siang,” he said.

When asked on whether he would raise national issues since Kit Siang is well known for raising national issues, he responded sarcastically.

“We understand their politics. Their national issues is only to save Malaysia. I don’t have hope with Pakatan Harapan. We also want to save Malaysia since we are afraid that they are corrupted,” he said.

Kit Siang’s son, Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng is currently facing corruption related charges in courts.

When asked on national issues that he would raise, Teoh said he would do so through his manifesto which would only be revealed after he is named officially as BN’s candidate for Gelang Patah in the 14th general election.

Gelang Patah is made up of two state constituencies – Skudai and Nusa Jaya. Skudai is represented by former state opposition leader Dr Boo Cheng Hau whereas Nusa Jaya is led by Umno’s Zaini Abu Bakar.

Teoh was supposed to defend the Gelang Patah seat during the 13th general election but the seat was given to former Johor menteri besar Abdul Ghani Othman who was defeated by Kit Siang.

The DAP veteran ended Ghani’s political career with a 14,762 vote majority in 2013. The Gelang Patah seat was previously held by MCA’s Tan Ah Heng since 2004.

MCA going strong in Johor

Teoh released a YouTube video clip entitled ‘Jason Teoh’s suffering’ in January.

The clip showed his disappointment and the revolt within Gelang Patah MCA over the last minute decision to field Abdul Ghani as Umno’s candidate during the 13th general election.

Meanwhile, responding to another question, Teoh was confident that MCA would be able to defend its parliament seats in Johor.

“Johor is doing very well since the 13th general election under the leadership of Johor Menteri Besar Khaled Nordin. Wee Ka Siong, Wee Jeck Seng and Chua Tee Yong are doing a lot in their respective constituencies,” he said.

Ka Siong is minister in Prime Minister’s Department, Ayer Hitam MP and MCA deputy president.

Tee Yong meanwhile is deputy international trade and industry minister and Labis MP. Jeck Seng, the Tanjung Piai MP, is the sole MCA backbencher who is set to defend his seat for a third term.

Another MCA stronghold is Tebrau which is held by first term MP Khoo Soo Seang.

Three other MCA seats currently under the DAP in Johor are Bakri, Kluang and Kulai; held by Ter Eck Hwa, Liew Chin Tong and Teo Nie Ching respectively.
