Lim Guan Eng says this referring to a newspaper clipping quoting Jahara Hamid that those who wish to apply for the one-off payment needed to register as a party member
GEORGE TOWN: Recipients of the state government’s one-off flood relief payments do not need to register as members of any Pakatan Harapan parties, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today.
Lim who is also DAP secretary-general stressed that there were no conditions attached to the one-off payment contrary to media reports.
“This is a baseless accusation as there is no such condition attached to the one-off payment. If you look at our Warga Emas programme, we give it out to everyone, including Umno members, we do not only give to Pakatan supporters,” he said in his winding-up speech at the legislative assembly today, the Malay Mail Online reported.
Lim referred to a newspaper clipping quoting state Opposition Leader Jahara Hamid that those who wish to apply for the one-off payment needed to register as a party member.
To this, Jahara clarified that she had only said ‘difahamkan’ which she translated to “we have been made to understand”.
Lim, then, responded that ‘difahamkan’ is an assertion of fact.
“When you say, I understand that to apply for payment, you must be a member of a political party, this is an assertion,” he said.
He then demanded that Jahara show proof that applicants for the one-off payment were required to join a political party as a member.
“This is a serious accusation so the Opposition must show proof because this is corruption, this is not allowed, there was never such a thing,” he said.
He added that the Pakatan state government is one that acts for all and not only for Pakatan supporters.
“Maybe BN wants to be a government only for its supporters,” he said.
Jahara interrupted to point out that the BN federal government also gave out aid to everyone and not only to the coalition’s supporters.
In response to that, Lim said “maybe” BN wanted to be a government for BN supporters.
He again insisted that Jahara show proof that the Penang government had included a condition for recipients to join as a party member in order to get the one-off payment.
To this, Jahara said she will need time to get proof as she can’t come up with proof there and then.
“I give you until this afternoon after the break to show proof of this,” Lim said.
