Although the two shook hands later, the police must take a stern action to ensure the rule of law is upheld, says Ramkarpal Singh

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP parliamentarian Ramkarpal Singh today urged Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar to arrest comedian Sulaiman Yassin for assaulting film director David Teo on Wednesday.

The Bukit Gelugor MP said the incident, which happened in front of Prime Minister Najib Razak, was a serious concern as it showed the poor standard of security of those in charge of the event.

“The slapping of film director David Teo is a very serious matter and a reflection of the erosion of the rule of law in this country.

“That such an incident could have happened right in front of the PM is a serious concern as it shows the poor standards of security of those in charge of the event, not to mention the obvious lack of respect Sulaiman has for the PM,” said Ramkarpal in a statement.

“Khalid is well aware that action can be taken against Sulaiman regardless of whether a police report is lodged by Teo as the video recording of what happened is obvious.

“As such, I call upon Khalid to take the necessary steps to arrest Sulaiman forthwith for the purpose of investigating him for the assault of Teo,” he added.

The DAP member, however, questioned Khalid if he would take action by arresting Sulaiman, better known as Mat Over.

“Khalid’s failure to do so will undoubtedly be seen as a major dereliction of duty on his part and sends a message that people can get away with committing offences even when it is committed in front of the prime minister,” he said.

In the incident on Wednesday night, actor Mat Over slapped Teo during a TN50 dialogue for the entertainment industry between Prime Minister Najib and local artistes held at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya.

It started when Teo expressed dissatisfaction against actor-producer and event moderator Rosyam Nor, who was allegedly only giving attention to those in the front row, before Mat Over walked over and slapped Teo.

Mat Over was later reported as saying that he acted that way due to the disrespectful behaviour of Teo in addressing Najib, adding that he had no regret in slapping the film director.

Mat Over and Teo later shook hands at the request of Najib.
