BERITA DAILY LETTER: From N Surendran and Latheefa Koya, via e-mail
On Nov 8, after Anwar Ibrahim’s suit against the government over the allegation of payment of RM9.5 million in relation to the sodomy prosecution was dismissed, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah claimed in comments to the media that he had denied the payment in his affidavit filed in the case (“it is also there in the affidavit which I filed “).
We disagree. Shafee’s claim to have denied it in his affidavit is without basis. Nowhere in his affidavit did he unequivocally deny the payment. A simple perusal of the affidavit, which is a public document, will demonstrate this.
Shafee also claimed that he had wanted to make a comment on the allegation against him earlier, but he could not do so because the suit by Anwar was filed and pending in court.
This is not an acceptable reason for not having said anything earlier. He had ample opportunity to reply to the allegations before the suit was filed. The timeline proves this.
Sarawak Report made the allegation on May 31, 2017. In the days following, the allegation was widely published and circulated. Anwar only filed his suit on June 9, 2017. Thus, Shafee could have easily responded before the suit was filed.
Shafee’s belated comments simply leaves us with more unanswered questions.
