USM’s Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid says that the Amanah president can sway votes of both the Malays and non Malays

KUALA LUMPUR: A USM based political scientist does not dispel the notion that fielding Amanah president Mohamad Sabu for a state seat in Selangor may result in Amanah taking over the Selangor menteri besar’s position if Pakatan Harapan retains the state in GE14.

“The Malay grassroots are currently not confident of Amanah. Mohamad Sabu’s contesting a state seat would serve to boost the confidence of the Malays,” said Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid.

“Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali is also indebted to PAS assemblymen. If Mohamad Sabu is fielded as Pakatan Harapan’s sole MB candidate, he would be able to sway the Malay voters.

“The grassroots level non Malay voters would also support him with the backing from the DAP,” he said.

He added that it was time for Amanah to make inroads by taking a political gamble since Amanah does not have much of a presence.

The Selangor Amanah chapter proposed that its party president Mohamad Sabu contest a state seat in the PKR-led state during its convention over the weekend.

The move to have Mohamad Sabu in Selangor is seen as a counter measure to place him as the party’s menteri besar candidate as PKR sought to have ties with PAS.

It is also believed that the DAP is backing Amanah. PAS is not on talking terms with both the DAP and Amanah, an off shoot of PAS.

Amanah currently has two state seats in Selangor – Hulu Klang and Morib which are represented by Saari Sungib and Hasnul Baharuddin respectively.

USM’s social sciences faculty deputy dean P Sivamurugan meanwhile does not see Mohamad Sabu as a potential candidate for the coveted MB post.

“Mohamad Sabu does not have a permanent constituency. Amanah will be taking a risk by fielding him. Perhaps they see him as having a better chance in Selangor,” said Sivamurugan.

“However, whether he can take over Azmin’s position is a another question since Azmin is popular. Mohamad Sabu’s presence in Selangor is meant to counter PAS more than take over Azmin’s position,” he said.

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli who leads the anti-PAS faction within PKR meanwhile does not see Mohamad Sabu as a threat to Azmin.

“After the momentous last seven months of Pakatan Harapan, everyone is focused on winning Putrajaya. Who occupies what position is secondary,” he said via WhatsApp.

He said that Selangor Amanah’s decision was based on the fact that Klang Valley was Pakatan Harapan’s power base.

“It is logical that Mohamad Sabu leads the charge for Amanah from its power base in Klang Valley like Selangor. All other parties have done the same, including DAP and even PAS.
