A fourth confirmed victim, a five-year-old girl, remains in critical condition in the paediatric intensive care unit at the Sarawak GH

KUALA LUMPUR: The third rabies victim in Sarawak has succumbed to the disease, said Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today.

The seven-year-old girl from Kampung Lebor, Serian died just over a week after a brother and sister passed away.

Noor Hisham said the girl died at 2.16pm on Thursday.

A fourth confirmed victim, a five-year-old girl, remains in critical condition in the paediatric intensive care unit at the Sarawak General Hospital.

“As of July 13, there are four confirmed cases of rabies in Serian, Sarawak. No new cases have been reported.

“Active case detection to trace dog bite cases has been carried out at 96 villages involving 5,663 households and 21,978 people,” said Noor Hisham.

He added in a statement that 225 dog bite cases have been detected in Serian district and treated.

Noor Hisham advised the public in Serian to take preventive measures, including seeking immediate treatment if they are bitten by dogs and to avoid contact with stray dogs.

On July 4, a six-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother from Kampung Paon, Sungai Rimu, Serian, died from the infection.

Meanwhile, the state government has declared Kampung Tangga in Serian as rabies-infected.

Six other villages declared as rabies-infected areas earlier are Kampung Paon Rimu, Kampung Paon Rimu Bakung, Kampung Remun, Kampung Lebor, Kampung Krait and Kampung Saroban.
