Ong Kian Ming raises the possibility of conflict of interest since Idris Jala holds key positions in both organisations
KUALA LUMPUR: Serdang DAP MP Ong Kian Ming today cast doubt on the appointment of Idris Jala as chairman of Heineken Malaysia while he was still the chief executive officer for Pemandu.
“Some ppl have asked me why @IdrisJala_ should resign as CEO of Pemandu now that he is the chairman of Heineken Msia.
“Backbenchers who become Ministers & Dep(uty) Ministers have to resign their directorships from public listed companies. Just ask @NurJazlan,” he wrote on Twitter.
The reason for this is that once you are part of the government, you can have impact of government policies, he noted.
“If you are still a director of a company, you may (make) policy decisions to benefit that company. Hence, the possibility of conflict of interest,” he said.
He said the rule applies to Idris even though he is no longer a government minister, because of his role as CEO of Pemandu which Ong said still gives him influence on government policy via the National Transformation Programme (NTP), even as Pemandu is transitioning.
“In order to live up to the high ideals of transparency which @IdrisJala_ often speaks abt, he should have resigned as Pemandu CEO even before he was named as the chairman of Heineken Malaysia so that even the hint of conflict of interest does not arise. Instead, @IdrisJala_ has stayed on as CEO of Pemandu even after he was named Heineken Msia’s chairman,” said Ong further.
He said it also did not bode well that Idris has not given any indication of whether he will resign as CEO of Pemandu thus far.
“Again, this is not ideal,” he lamented.
Ong also cast doubts on Pemandu Associates Sdn Bhd saying it would be used as a private consulting company to solicit public and private businesses
“I suspect Pemandu Associates will solicit public & private business as a private consulting company
“Pemandu is 100% owned by Mof Inc @IdrisJala_ can resign as CEO of Pemandu even as he sets up Pemandu Associates Sdn Bhd
“Also raises the question of whether @idrisjala_ wants to leverage the Pemandu brand name by not resigning & setting up the sdn bhd,” he added.
